Description of Incident

From Saturday 27 September, there has been major upgrade work to the signalling system in the Gloucester area. This was due to be completed yesterday, however, was not completed on time.

It is estimated that the engineering work will overrun until at least Wednesday morning, meaning all lines will be closed until the end of the day on Tuesday 7 October.

As a result, trains scheduled to run to, from, and through Gloucester will be cancelled or revised to start or terminate at different stations until the the end of the day tomorrow.

The lines are expected to reopen on Wednesday morning. Once the lines have reopened, disruption is expected until 12:00 on Wednesday 8 October whilst trains return to a normal timetable.

CrossCountry customer advice:

Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 October

Trains will not run between Cheltenham Spa and Bristol Parkway / Cardiff Central. Services across the country will terminate or start their journeys at Cheltenham Spa or Birmingham New Street.

Additional train shuttles will run between Bristol Parkway and Plymouth.

Rail replacement buses are running between Cheltenham Spa and Bristol Parkway to help with your journey.

Customers with tickets dated Monday 6 or Tuesday 7 October travelling to Cheltenham Spa or travelling through Cheltenham Spa to get to Bristol / Cardiff and other locations may use their ticket to travel free of charge either on Wednesday 8 or Thursday 9 October.

Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 October

Services between Cheltenham Spa / Gloucester and London Paddington will run between Kemble and London Paddington only.

Services between Worcester / Gloucester and Westbury / Bristol Temple Meads will run between Westbury / Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway only.

Replacement road transport is in place between:

  • Worcester Shrub Hill and Gloucester, calling at Worcestershire Parkway, Ashurch for Tewkesbury, and Cheltenham Spa
  • Gloucester and Kemble, calling at Stonehouse and Stroud
  • Gloucester and Bristol Parkway, calling at Cam & Dursley and Yate

Please note, in order for these replacement buses to operate, reduced parking is available at Gloucester. The car park at Cheltenham Spa is closed.

To further assist you with your journey, you can use your ticket on the following Stagecoach bus routes, at no extra cost:

  • 51: Swindon bus station – Cheltenham Promenade
  • 94 / 94X: Gloucester – Cheltenham
  • 10: Gloucester – Cheltenham
  • 62: Gloucester – Stroud – Stonehouse
  • 63: Gloucester – Stroud
  • 64: Gloucester – Stonehouse – Stroud
  • 65: Gloucester – Stonehouse – Cam – Dursley – Stroud
  • 66: Cheltenham – Stroud

You can also use First Bus Bristol services on the following routes at no extra cost:

  • Y1: Bristol City Centre – Yate, Hardwicke
  • Y2: Bristol City Centre – Leechpool Way
  • Y6: Bristol City Centre – Southmead Hospital
  • 74: Hengrove Bus Depot – Bradley Stoke, Great Park Road

Wednesday 8 October

Once lines reopen on Wednesday morning, Great Western Railway will aim to run as close to a normal timetable as possible. Services may still be subject to disruption, as many trains will be out of position. Please check your journey before travelling on Wednesday morning. Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 October

Transport for Wales services between Cheltenham Spa / Gloucester and Cardiff Central will run between Lydney and Cardiff Central only.
