History of The M69

The history of the M69 motorway is quite interesting. It was originally planned as part of the Coventry – Leicester Motorway, which would have continued beyond Leicester to Newark-on-Trent and connected with the A1. However, this proposal was dropped due to environmental and economic concerns.

The M69 motorway was then approved as a separate project, following a public inquiry in 1972. It was designed to relieve traffic congestion on the A46 and provide a faster link between Leicester and Coventry, two major cities in the Midlands. The construction began in 1974 and was completed in 1977, costing about £19 million.

The M69 motorway was almost cancelled due to the oil crisis of 1973-74, which led to a reduction in road spending. However, a campaign group called M69 Now formed to protest in favour of the motorway being built. They argued that the M69 would save fuel, time and lives by providing a safer and more efficient route. Their campaign succeeded in persuading the government to re-approve the motorway in 1974.

The M69 motorway was opened by the Minister of Transport, William Rodgers, on 9 December 1977. It was hailed as a modern and well-engineered road that would benefit both local and long-distance traffic. It also had some innovative features, such as a variable message sign system that could warn drivers of hazards or delays ahead.

The M69 motorway has remained largely unchanged since its opening, except for some minor improvements and maintenance works. It has a good safety record and a relatively low traffic volume compared to other motorways in the region. It is still an important link between Leicester and Coventry, as well as other destinations via the M1 and the M6.
