The fascinating history of the A13 road
Did you know that the A13 road has been around for over 200 years? It was originally built to connect the City of London with the newly expanding Docklands area, which was a major hub of trade and commerce. In this section, we will explore some of the interesting facts and milestones of this historic road.
The origins of Commercial Road and East India Dock Road
The first section of the A13 road, Commercial Road, was opened in 1802, followed by East India Dock Road in 1812. These roads were designed to provide a direct link between the City and the East India Docks, which were built to accommodate the growing trade with India and China. The first iron bridge across the River Lea was built in 1810, linking the two roads. The A13 route was a vital artery for the historic East End, serving many industries and communities along the way.
The evolution of the East Ham & Barking By-pass
Over time, the road was extended and improved to cope with the increasing traffic and development. The first bypass section was opened in 1924, followed by several other bypasses and upgrades in the later decades. The latest major improvement was completed in 2013, when a new junction with the M25 motorway was built near Aveley. Today, the A13 is a modern and efficient road that links Central London with East London and South Essex, running parallel to the London, Tilbury and Southend railway line and passing through the northern Thames Gateway area.

why is it top secret regarding the details of planned closures of the Lodge Avenue flyover, Barking, at nights after 10pm, I and my colleagues who finish work at 10pm have spent hours trawling the internet trying to find out what nights and for how ling this work will be causing mayhem. None of us has had any success at all in getting any information at all, why is this ? Why not just put it on the TFL site ? Or anywhere ?
Avoid A13 Poplar at all costs. 38 minutes to travel 250 feet.
